Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services ("WSS") is a platform that extends the Windows Server 2003 platform. With the main premise to help keep teams connected together and working more effectively. The platform is extremely extensible and can be used to develop solutions to business needs.

Currently in it's third version, the Windows SharePoint Services platform is gaining a lot of attention with many companies.

  • 2003
    • Known as Windows SharePoint Services v2 ("WSS 2.0").
    • Free download that conformed to the Windows Server 2003 license model.
    • Added more collaborative features.
    • Platform extended and enhanced with SharePoint Portal Server ("SPS") 2003.
  • 2007
    • Product known as Windows SharePoint Services v3 ("WSS 3.0").
    • Greatly enhanced over it's previous versions.
    • Re-designed around the ASP.NET 2.0 framework and architecture.
    • Platform extended and enhanced with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server ("MOSS") 2007.
